About William Coughlan, Jr.
Mr. Coughlan has been organizing food co-operatives, housing co-operatives, condos, and worker co-operatives for more than 40 years. All throughout his activism he has organized and written about this practice to the wider public audience as an author and a co-author of four earlier works:
- The Organizer's Manual by the O.M. Collective (110,000 copies in three printings)
- The Food Co-op Handbook by the Handbook Collective, Houghton Mifflin, 1975, repagination by Co-op Publishing Limited, 1983 (e-mail wcoughlan@adelphia.net for copies)

Mr. Coughlan’s education includes a bachelor of arts in political science
(1970) and two master’s degrees—one in education (1978) and one
in urban planning (1978)—from Boston University and a master’s
degree in sociology (1997) from Boston College. He serves on the
membership committee for the people's Food Co-op of Cleveland and is an adjunct professor at Cuyahoga Community College. He lives in South Euclid, Ohio, with his wife June and his cat Violet the Pilot.
